Genomics, Health, and Public Policy Graduate Certificate Online

Program Availability

The online Graduate Certificate in Genomics, Health, and Public Policy is open to eligible students in the U.S. (including the District of Columbia and all U.S. territories). The program also is open to students in Canada (all provinces). The program is closed to students residing in countries other than the U.S. and Canada except for U.S. military and State Department personnel and their family members with APO/FPO addresses.

The program is also offered on the Indiana State University campus.

Our Genomics, Health, and Public Policy Graduate Certificate offers you an interdisciplinary approach, combining studies in biology, political science, business, and ethics. Coursework includes four core courses covering topics in genome science, bioethics, public policy, and business and consumer implications of genomics. In addition, you will select an elective, which enables you to customize the program to fit your particular needs and interests.

You can complete the certificate program entirely online or on the Indiana State campus in 12-18 months, depending on the elective selected. You have the option of completing the certificate or enrolling in one or more courses.

Upon successful completion of program requirements, you will be awarded a certificate.

Note: Courses in this certificate program may partially satisfy requirements in other ISU graduate programs in areas such as biology, criminology and criminal justice, health sciences, human resource development, nursing, public administration, public health, business, and social work. Students should check with their advisors to determine course applicability.

Faculty in the Department of Biology aspire to nurture the academic potential of every student and advance knowledge through quality research. Many of our faculty members have received awards and recognition for their research in biological sciences. Our small class sizes enable students to work jointly with their professors on research projects, which may lead to presentations at scientific meetings and publications in scientific journals.

The department houses the core facility of The Center for Genomic Advocacy, a multidisciplinary University center. The core facility is equipped with a next-generation sequencer and other key equipment for genomic research. The department also houses a research museum and maintains a field station. In addition, the department is home to the Center for Bat Research, Outreach, and Conservation, which conducts scientific research and community outreach on the biology of bats. The University owns three natural areas that support field research.

Admission Requirements and Application Instructions

The Genomics, Health, and Public Policy Graduate Certificate Program accepts applications for student enrollment throughout the year. There are no application deadlines. Applicants should receive admission decisions within one calendar month of the application submission.

Returning Indiana State students must apply for re-admission if they have not attended Indiana State University for more than two calendar years.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Note: The GRE (Graduate Record Exam) is not required.

1. A baccalaureate degree granted by a regionally accredited institution (for international students, a degree granted by a recognized institution);
2. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7 in all undergraduate coursework; or a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework; or a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 in all courses taken at the graduate level;
3. A one-page statement of intent, a written statement of the applicant's reasons for entering the Genomics, Health, and Public Policy Graduate Certificate program.

Next Steps

Once admitted, students receive notification from the University as well as their University ID number needed to activate their University Username on the MyISU Portal. The Portal offers access to online registration, University records, and other important University services, including e-mail, and University announcements.
